CANAL BOAT OPEN MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND, MAY 29, 30 and 31

The canal boat ride in Hugh Moore Park begins operating on May 13.  The 2010 schedule is as follows:

 

From May 13-May 28, the canal boat operates on a limited weekday schedule with advance reservations.

 

The canal boat will be open Memorial Day Weekend (May 29, 30 and 31), and open for the season from June 2 – September 5, operating Wednesday through Sunday, 1 to 4 PM.  On Labor Day and weekends only in September the boat operates 1 to 4 PM.  The last public ride will be Saturday, September 25.

 

The mule-drawn canal boat operates on a restored section of the Lehigh Canal in Easton's Hugh Moore Park.  Visitors can meet the mules, learn how to steer the boat and blow the conch shell horn.  The regular ride lasts 40 minutes.  Admission to the canal boat is $9.25 for adults (16 and older), $8.75 for Seniors and $6.50 for children 3 to 15.  Children 2 and under are free. Admission to the canal boat ride includes a visit to the Emrick Technology Center and the exhibits on Lehigh Valley industry.  Come get an insider’s view of the Dixie Cup Company.  “I Reach for a Dixie” features artifacts, documents and machinery that highlight the history of one of Easton’s most recognizable product manufacturers.  Emrick Technology Center admission is $6, and is free to members of the National Canal Museum.

 

The Josiah White II features a steel hull and a wood superstructure.  The boat is outfitted with above- and below-deck seating, restrooms, handicap accessibility, and a canopy for protection from the sun and rain.  The canal boat can be chartered for church socials, reunions, club activities and other special events.  Entertainment and catering can be arranged.  For more information and reservations, call the park office at 610-559-6613 between 9 AM and 4:30 PM Monday through Friday.

 

Visitors to Hugh Moore Park can hike or bike the park's trails, including the Towpath Trail, River Trail and a 4-mile paved bikepath.  Canoes and pedalboats can be rented during the hours of canal boat operation.  Canoe and pedalboat rentals are available at the Canal Boat Store for use in the park.

 

Picnickers, hikers, fishing enthusiasts, families and nature lovers can visit the park year-round from dawn to dusk.  Picnic tables and grills can be found throughout the park.  Groups can rent picnic pavilions, which accommodate up to 120 persons.  Make reservations by calling 610-515-8000 (select #2 on menu).

 

To reach Hugh Moore Park from I-78, follow signs for Route 611 north 1.3 miles; turn left at end of bridge onto Larry Holmes Drive; turn left (1 block) onto Lehigh Drive; go 2 miles and turn left onto bridge into Hugh Moore Park. From Route 22, take 25th Street south 1.6 miles, turn right onto Lehigh Drive; go to stop sign and turn right on entrance bridge into park.
